ASAP Selects 10 Alliance Excellence Awards Finalists for 2017

Every year, ASAP highlights outstanding member accomplishments at the Global Alliance Summit. This year, 10 nominees will be competing in four categories for the Alliance Excellence Awards: Individual Alliance Excellence, Innovative Best Alliance Practice, Alliance Program Excellence, and Alliance for Corporate Social Responsibility.

“These companies have proven track records demonstrating significant leadership value in alliance management,” said Michael Leonetti, president & CEO of ASAP. “Our awards committee reviewed a number of outstanding nominees this year from a range of industries. We selected candidates that were going above and beyond in their practices and can serve as models for the ASAP community. They hail from industries such as consumer credit reporting, audit, tax, and advisory services, IT, utilities, healthcare, consulting, and biopharma, and the projects span the globe, including the Kruger National Park in South Africa,” he added.  

“I especially appreciate the submissions for Social Corporate Responsibility,” added Norma Watenpaugh, CSAP, chair of the 2017 Alliance Excellence Awards committee and founder/CEO of Phoenix Consulting Group. “We had three worthy finalists for that category this year. It’s always great to see the contributions companies are making to make the world a better place.”

Past winners received awards for significant contributions through partnering that increased revenues, provided society with creative business models and problem solving, enhanced products/services/technologies, advanced the profession, etc. Additional value is placed on leadership practices that result in high levels of productivity, effort, achievement, and innovation. Past winners share three key achievements:

  • Creativity and out-of-the-box thinking that has evolved the art and science of alliance management
  • Compelling and measurable results
  • General persistence in overcoming obstacles

 Individual Alliance Excellence Award

The Individual Alliance Excellence Award is given to a partnership that has instituted practices, tools, and methodologies in support of successful formation and management for a single alliance. The alliance may be an emerging alliance or comprised of two or more companies. The three finalists are:

Bayer-Evotec: This strategic research alliance hopes to identify three small molecule clinical candidates for the treatment of endometriosis. Bayer and Evotec have joint responsibility in early research and preclinical characterization of potential candidates, with Bayer responsible for subsequent clinical development and commercialization. To date the alliance team has delivered five preclinical candidates, exceeding the initial goals of the collaboration.

Loonaangifteketen-UWV-CBS- Belastingdienst: After a disastrous start, this unique partnership of three government agencies managing tax revenues in The Netherlands—Belastingdienst (Dutch IRA), UWV (Dutch National Social Security Administration), and CBS (Statistics Netherlands)—became highly effective by applying alliance management best practices, such as development of governance, trust building, and extensive attention to team meetings.

National Grid-EnergySage: The alliance provides a marketplace for solar energy to Rhode Island residents by leveraging existing programs that provide an energy efficiency assessment with a solar assessment. The multi-level value creation is designed to meet the state’s carbon reduction goals and create jobs in alternative energy, while providing a one-stop website for all services, and where dozens of local solar installers provide quotes and choices.

Innovative Best Alliance Practice Award

This year’s Innovative Best Alliance Practice Award will be presented to one of two companies for the use of new alliance management tools or processes that have an immediate and powerful impact on the organization and/or discipline of alliance management. The tools or processes are additions to existing practices that address specific elements of alliance management, such as measurement, training, conflict resolution, general communication across the partner ecosystem, or similar facets of the discipline. The two finalists are:

KPMG-UK: This KPMG-powered enterprise branding combines the company’s knowledge of back-office transformation with leading cloud technology providers, such as Oracle, Workday, ServiceNow, and Coupa. The innovation in branding and bundling technology helps accountants easily grasp the business value and significantly increase the win rate in competitive situations.

NetApp: While many companies still try to manage partnering processes through spreadsheets, NetApp has invested in technology and governance of its rigorous alliance co-selling program to ensure trackable processes that produce results. The processes engage NetApp and partner representatives proactively in account mapping, account planning, and pipeline management with exemplary execution of the most difficult aspects of go-to-market alliances. 

Alliance Program Excellence Award

The Alliance Program Excellence Award is presented to a single, specific company and its partnering program, not to an alliance. The company exceeds expectations with scalable practices, tools, and methodologies to support successful formation and management of alliance portfolios over time. They are repeatable and have led to consistent alliance performance across multiple alliances. Winners build programs on efficiency, creativity, and an integrated suite of tools, processes, professional development/alliance professional certification, and other elements. The two finalists are:

Equifax: Equifax has built an exemplary partnering program in an industry where partnership and alliance business models are still at the budding stages. Internal governance structures enabled management across a highly matrixed enterprise and impacted results on multiple levels, such as revenue, the ability to enter new markets, the launch of new products, and changes to organizational culture.

STC Solutions: This highly innovative, consolidated, and centralized alliance and partnership management framework spans different divisions and functional groups throughout the organization and business relationshipsfrom supply side to customer side. The framework develops and promotes an extremely effective corporate-wide collaborative culture that includes supplier, tactical alliances, technology partners, cloud/IoT channel partners, and strategic alliances.

Alliances for Corporate Social Responsibility Award

The Alliances for Corporate Social Responsibility Award is for partnerships making a profound, measurable, and positive social impact. The principal objective of the alliance is social impact, not profit—although profit, especially if used to fund program expansion, is not discouraged. The three partnering finalists are:

Bayer and Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi): The focus of this alliance is to develop a drug to dramatically reduce treatment time and increase effectiveness for River Blindness, a disease affecting 25 million people in 31 African countries. Current treatments only affect young worms and must be repeated to target adult worms over their 17-year lifespan. Bayer has contracted with non-profit DNDi to provide the new drug at an affordable price for national disease control programs.

Dimension Data and Cisco Systems, Inc.: South Africa is home to 70 percent of the remaining rhinos in the world. Cisco Systems and Dimension Data collaborated in the Connected Conservation initiative to apply Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to prevent and reduce the number of rhinos being poached in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. The alliance developed new technology for tracking rhinos without needing to tranquilize them, which can be extremely dangerous to the animals. The technology also creates tight physical security within the preserve to track staff, suppliers, contractors, security, and visitors. The technology and alliance can be replicated to conserve other endangered species.       

The Synergist-Sanofi: This multiparty alliance incorporates an ecosystem approach to address Dengue fever that includes the general public, government and health agencies, industry, academics, and healthcare professionals aimed at co-creating solutions. “Break Dengue” uses information sharing and crowd sourcing through social media, online chats, case tracking worldwide, and public access to toolkits that reduce risk of infection. The Synergist framework and innovative governance structure provides a systematic approach to manage a diverse ecosystem. The platform is extendible to other diseases, such as Zika.

Can Your Partners Dance with the ASAP Stars? Perhaps It’s Time To Consider a 2016 Alliance Excellence Award Submission

Submissions are being accepted through November 18, 2015 for the 2016 ASAP Alliance Excellence Awards to be presented at the ASAP Global Alliance Summit, “Partnering Everywhere: Expert Leadership for the Ecosystem,” March 1-4, at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, National Harbor, Maryland, USA.  The awards are an opportunity for partners to strut their stuff, display innovative moves, and demonstrate leadership with new models and approaches. They are a way of honoring alliance programs for a range of advances—from social impact to increased revenue to advancements in the profession.

 

Corporations, mid-sized enterprises, start-ups, and public-private initiatives are welcome to submit in the following categories

 

The Individual Alliance Excellence Award is given to a company that has excelled in planning, implementation, and results for a single alliance. The alliance may be between two companies or multiple organizations in the category of small-to-midsize company alliance and/or emerging alliance. This year’s winners were National Grid and Earth Networks for their innovative alliance that brought weather monitoring stations and programs to communities and public school STEM programs in New England.

 

The Alliance for Corporate Social Responsibility Award is for partnerships that make a profound, measurable, and positive social impact. The principal objective of the alliance is social impact, not profit—although profit, especially if used to fund program expansion, is not discouraged. The Dow Chemical Company and The Nature Conservancy received the award this year for a partnership that created a sustainability model that can be used by corporations integrating the value of nature into business decisions. 

 

The Innovative Best Alliance Practice Award is presented to a company using new, individual alliance management tools or processes that have an immediate and powerful impact on the organization and/or discipline of alliance management. These tools or processes are not comprehensive alliance programs but additions to existing alliance practice that address specific elements of alliance management, such as measurement, training, conflict resolution, general communication across-the-partner ecosystem, or similar facets of the discipline. Philips won the award for an innovative two-step approach to create a joint brand identity for a partnership. Janssen—Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson received honorable mention.

 

The Alliance Program Excellence Award is given to organizations that exceed expectations by consistently implementing and managing alliance portfolios and demonstrating consistent success of those alliances over time. Winners build programs on creativity, efficiency, an integrated suite of processes, tools, professional development/alliance professional certification, and other elements. Takeda Pharmaceuticals received the award for creation of its progressive Center of Excellence (COE). Bayer was given honorable mention.

Outsmarting the Weather: Innovative Multi-partner Collaboration Uses Weather Monitoring Stations To Benefit Communities, Schools, and Government Agencies

A National Grid and Earth Networks collaboration made it easier for United States Postal Service workers in New England last winter to adhere to their motto: Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. In theory, that is. The innovative vendor-relationship-turned-alliance won them the ASAP Individual Alliance Excellence Award at the March ASAP Global Alliance Summit in Orlando, Florida.

Utility National Grid needed a better way to determine where electric asset damages could occur before a storm hit its service territory in Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island. The utility developed an industry-leading predictive storm damage model with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and purchased the historical weather data for the model from Earth Networks. The companies partnered in 2013 to create additional weather stations in areas where they did not exist, and National Grid donated 55 stations to police and fire departments and local schools. In addition to creating a unique math and science teaching tool for children, the initiative program provides town emergency personnel with local information to determine whether to sand roads, cancel school or sporting events, and/or determine the location of dangerous squalls or lightening in the area.

“As severe weather becomes more and more common in our communities, access to real-time, local weather information is increasingly important for preparation and response to major storms and emergency events,” explains Eliza Davis, lead program manager of alliance and vendor strategy at National Grid.  “The weather station data serves as another source of on-the-ground information as National Grid teams decide where to place utility crews and assets. The data also helps towns decide when it is safe to send police and fire crews to respond to emergencies and outages.”

Over a 20-year period, Earth Networks has grown a labyrinth of 10,000 weather stations worldwide, each of which provides data every two seconds. “This data and all historical weather data from the stations are being fed into the predictive storm damage model to better understand how specific weather attributes contribute to asset damages. Overall, the WeatherBug weather data has driven a 50 percent improvement in the accuracy of the model,” says Davis. 

For Earth Networks, the collaboration is both financially and educationally beneficial—not only for local school children but for its meteorologists. “The collaboration gave them the ability to see more of the widespread winds and precipitation in the New England region, especially in upstate New York, where there are very few weather stations. Some 24 new weather stations were installed in New York as part of the collaboration,” says meteorologist Dennis Stewart, senior account executive of energy solutions at Earth Networks-WeatherBug. “Meteorology is all about data. The increase in the collective data has helped significantly with forecasting severe weather and has been proactive in storm preparations with disasters,” which sometimes involves federal agencies.

Community members can download the free WeatherBug app on their phones to access their town’s current weather conditions, forecasts, emergency notifications, and even pinpoint local lightning strikes. Many of these towns previously relied on weather data from 20 miles away.

 “The utility industry faces significant challenges as we plan for the effects of increasingly severe weather on the assets that deliver power to our customers,” Davis points out. “In addition, regulators and stakeholders are encouraging utilities to collaborate with other companies in the energy service industry to animate markets, achieve efficiencies, create new revenue opportunities, and deliver greater value to our customers. Through the WeatherBug Initiative, National Grid is leading the effort to improve storm preparation and response while demonstrating our ability to partner for the benefit of our customers and the utility industry.”

Official ASAP Announcement and Forthcoming Q2 Strategic Alliance Magazine Article Shine the Spotlight on 2015 ASAP Alliance Excellence Award Winners

Think “rock star teams” with people “aligned and marching in the same direction” working to make significant contributions to society, science, sustainability, and corporate alliance management practices. That would be the winners of the 2015 ASAP Alliance Excellence Awards, which were presented March 3 at the 2015 ASAP Global Alliance Summit, officially announced in an ASAP press release this week, and will be recognized in the soon-to-be-published Q2 issue of Strategic Alliance Magazine. 

The 2015 recipients of the ASAP Alliance Excellence Awards are: 

  • National Grid/Earth Networks for Individual Alliance Excellence
  • The Dow Chemical Company/The Nature Conservancy for Alliance for Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Philips for Innovative Best Alliance Practice with honorable mention to Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson
  • Takeda Pharmaceuticals for Alliance Program Excellence with honorable mention to Bayer HealthCare
  • ASAP RTP Chapter for the Chapter Excellence Award 

The forthcoming Strategic Alliance Magazine article shares insights from a live Q&A session with the award winners. Moderator Jan Twombly, CSAP, president of The Rhythm of Business, asked recipients about key learnings.  At its core, our project “was about making decisions for all society. It moved us beyond basic philanthropy,” observed Elizabeth Uhlhorn, sustainability program manager at Dow Chemical. Dow and The Nature Conservancy received the Alliance for Corporate Social Responsibility Award for their partnership, which factors the value of nature into business decisions—a crucial step forward in fostering sustainability. 

National Grid won the Individual Alliance Excellence Award, which is given to a company that has excelled in planning, implementation, and results for a single alliance—in this case, with Earth Network’s weather monitoring equipment distributor WeatherBug. Asked what made their efforts awards-winning, “Our alliance delivered twice, first for National Grid to better understand where damage will occur.  Second, with community engagement and stewardship,” responded Eliza Davis, lead program manager, alliance and vendor strategy at National Grid. 

The awards “highlight some of the very best achievements in the industry and require hundreds of hours of work to qualify,” said Michael Leonetti, CSAP, president and CEO of ASAP, while announcing the winners. “There were more applicants this year than ever before,” added co-presenter Annlouise Goodermuth, CSAP, director of alliance management, strategy, science policy, and external innovation at Sanofi.

What Leads to Alliance Excellence? A Q&A Session with the 2015 ASAP Alliance Excellence Award Winners

Directly following the ASAP Alliance Excellence Awards ceremony at the 2015 Global Alliance Summit at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Florida, USA, Jan Twombly, CSAP, president of The Rhythm of Business, held an insightful question and answer session with executives representing each of the award recipients. The session uncovered insights into the hurdles award winners jumped to reach the highest mark.

The Individual Alliance Excellence Award is given to a company that has excelled in planning, implementation, and results for a single alliance. The alliance may be between two companies or multiple organizations in the category of small-to-midsize company alliance and/or emerging alliance. Utilities aren’t known for partnering, but National Grid broke away from the pack, procuring and donating 55 weather stations to schools and first responder sites in a partnership with Earth Network’s weather monitoring equipment distributor WeatherBug. The project provides free, accessible, local weather information to communities while improving storm response and power restoration, which saves local businesses and customers millions of dollars.

“Our alliance delivered twice, first for National Grid to better understand where damage will occur.  Second, with community engagement and stewardship,” Eliza Davis, lead program manager, alliance and vendor strategy at National Grid, pointed out during the Q&A. “We also allowed a new priority to evolve due to customer need and response” with the unique use of weather monitoring equipment in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education programs.

The Alliance for Corporate Social Responsibility Award is for partnerships that make a profound, measurable, and positive social impact. The principal objective of the alliance is social impact, not profit—although profit, especially if used to fund program expansion, is not discouraged. The Dow Chemical Company and The Nature Conservancy received the award for a partnership that factors the value of nature into business decisions—a crucial step forward in fostering sustainability. The project “moved us beyond basic philanthropy,” observed Elizabeth Uhlhorn, sustainability program manager at Dow. It created an environmental protection framework with a methodology for identifying and measuring (or valuing) tangible benefits of ecosystem services to integrate into corporate decision-making processes. The unusual alliance resulted in a viable plan for significant change in corporate practice that can be a sustainable model for other corporations.

 

The Innovative Best Alliance Practice Award is presented to a company using new, individual alliance management tools or processes that have an immediate and powerful impact on the organization and/or discipline of alliance management. These tools or processes are not comprehensive alliance programs but additions to existing alliance practice that address specific elements of alliance management such as measurement, training, conflict resolution, general communication across-the-partner ecosystem, or similar facets of the discipline. Philips won the award for its efforts to fine-tune the best structure to “help people get aligned and marching in the same direction,” explained Cees Bijl, vice president at Philips. Philips used an innovative two-step approach to create a joint brand identity for an alliance. It involved designing a framework and methodology that defines the most appropriate co-branding to prevent conflict, enhance effective communication between partners, and support an equal and well-grounded relationship. This is the second ASAP award for Philips, which is “confirmation that the direction we are going in is a good one,” he added.

JanssenPharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson received honorable mention for its globally accessible alliance scorecard and assessment tool, which can be used by one or multiple alliances to capture key strategic, operational, financial, and relationship metrics in a single assessment program, allowing participants to monitor progress individually or across the portfolio.

The Alliance Program Excellence Award is given to organizations that exceed expectations by consistently implementing and managing alliance portfolios and demonstrating consistent success of those alliances over time. Winners build programs on creativity, efficiency, an integrated suite of processes, tools, professional development/alliance professional certification, and other elements. Takeda Pharmaceuticals received the award for the creation of its progressive Center of Excellence (COE) to reach more broadly across functions and geographies, including emerging markets in China, South Korea, and Russia. Members can now extensively share best practices and tools for training, management, research, enhanced communication, and an on-line portal.

“We had a rock star kind of a team. They literally spent 50 percent of their time for many years” working on this project, said Andy Hull, vice president, global alliances, at Takeda. 

Bayer HealthCare received honorable mention for its significant investment into an Alliance Capability Enhancement Project to drive a partnering mindset and alliance best practices deep into the organization.
