ASAP European Alliance Summit To Provide ‘Extensive Content’ to Expanding Number of Participants

What was just around the corner begins tomorrow, one of Europe’s most advanced educational business opportunities the 2016 ASAP European Alliance Summit. Held at London’s exquisite Royal Garden Hotel near Kensington Gardens, “The New Ecosystem for Partnerships” is being jointly sponsored by the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals and Thought Leader Global.

The number of attending alliance managers and partnering practitioners is expected to double as compared to last year, providing ample opportunity to network. “This year’s ASAP European Alliance Summit is highly international and diverse with more than 100 participants confirmed so far,” said Ariann Ignati, operations manager at Thought Leader Global, which is known for arranging business media and events for senior management in multinational enterprises. “We have extensive content and presentations from the life sciences, IT, manufacturing, and many other industries,” including energy, smart cities, biopharma, engineering, chemical, and consumer goods.

An international contingent of around 30 progressive business thinkers from more than 15 countries will provide some of the most cutting edge information in their industries during two streams of programming. 2016 ASAP European Alliance Summit to Address the Latest Developments in the Evolving Partnering Ecosystem

This year’s ASAP European Alliance Summit scheduled for Nov. 3-4 hosted at the Royal Garden Hotel in London, England, should be particularly interesting given the recent news of the United Kingdom’s vote to depart from the European Union. How it might impact European alliances is certain to be addressed in the packed schedule of sessions and speakers with the Summit theme “The New Ecosystem for Partnerships.” The joint venture between ASAP and Thought Leader Global provides alliance managers in Europe and elsewhere with a window into the most current and cutting edge developments in their industries, as well as the latest in cross-industry partnering in an evolving ecosystem heavily impacted by trends taking place in the Internet of Things (IoT), healthcare, smart cities, the cloud, automotive trends, telecom, digital, and other areas.

2015 ASAP European Alliance Summit Echoes the Ecosystem Partnering Theme

The European Union is following the United States’ lead in cross-industry partnering. Partnering executives from across Europe convened to explore “The New Ecosystem for Partnerships” at the October 15-16, 2015 ASAP European Alliance Summit, held at the NH Amsterdam Grand Hotel in Amsterdam. Co-sponsored by Thought Leader Global, which specializes in organizing corporate events across the spectrum of corporate strategy, business development, and finance, the event drew about 60 attendees, most of whom were heads of strategic alliances and partnerships from all kinds of industries, primarily multi-nationals. 

The “successful partnership” between the two co-sponsors created a “great opportunity” for companies looking to learn from “different types of collaborations,” said ASAP Chairman of the Board Christine Carberry, CSAP, senior vice president, quality, technical operations, program & alliance management, at FORUM Pharmaceuticals, who attended the gathering. “In the past, it was biopharma-to-biopharma, high tech-to-high tech. We are now seeing much more partnering diversity across industries, including the service sector, academic institutions, and healthcare providers,” she explained.  “We are starting to get a much more diverse membership in ASAP and with people who are newer in alliance management.” 

Some 20 percent of ASAP membership is European-based, and the alliance community in Europe is an area of growth, said Carberry. 

“People are beginning to realize they need to build alliance management capability across their entire organization. And people are beginning to get interested in how to provide more resources, training, and guidance to those who need those skills and capabilities because they interact with partners and collaborations, “ Carberry added. 

Cross-industry collaboration is definitely happening in Europe, “but probably at a slower rate than the US,” agreed Scott Rogers, Thought Leader Global’s project manager. “One of the strengths of this event is benchmarking both within and outside your industry. So there are best practices from pharmaceutical companies managing alliances in complex ecosystems, but also strategies from IT companies handling unique technology partnerships. Terminology may sometimes differ, but essential principles remain the same.” 

Reflecting on the Summit, he said Sanofi, Ericsson, Takeda, and Unilever offered excellent presentations. Prominent manufacturing companies shared highly relevant experiences, and mature and emerging alliance managers gained best practices and possible networking connections with fellow attendees. “We reviewed the evaluation forms and we’re happy to report that attendees gave positive reviews to all the presentations, with many favoring speakers in their industry,” he added.

Summit attendees participated in sessions that spanned biopharma and high tech. Carberry singled out two sessions relating to the global trend of high tech and biopharma partnering because their convergence is requiring news skills and approaches. 

One session about R&D and strategy was given by Ingo Hoffmann, global head of strategic alliances & partner ecosystem at IBM’s Curam Solutions & Smarter Care. The other, Joint Ventures to Advance Corporate Development and Growth in New Markets” on advanced ventures and how they partner and grow, was given by Pierrick Rollet, vice president of global strategic partnerships & joint ventures at GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines. 

Carberry and Rogers agreed that the event exemplifies a win-win partnership, allowing ASAP to convene a significant contingent of its European members while also connecting with executives who are new to the association. 

“It was a high-quality event at a location well-suited for our European colleagues,” Carberry said. “I think it’s been a successful partnership between ASAP and Thought Leader Global. About half of people were familiar with ASAP.”

“This event theme fits perfectly within our portfolio, and we are able to leverage relationships from our other events to support this one,” added Rogers. “We are pleased with the ongoing collaboration between Thought Leader Global and ASAP.”

‘A Bit of Our Own Medicine’: ASAP Partners to the Launch Successful 2014 European Alliance Summit

This fall, ASAP joined forces with Thought Leader Global to deliver its first ASAP European Alliance Summit, held Nov. 13 and 14 at Geneva’s Hotel President Wilson. ASAP President & CEO Michael Leonetti, who welcomed more than 60 executives in attendance, said the success of the event vindicates ASAP’s approach. Partnering with an organization that had “boots on the ground” in Europe significantly accelerated the development timeline—and ensured ASAP and Thought Leader Global delivered a compelling program.

 

This week, ASAP Media caught up with Leonetti to what made the ASAP European Alliance Summit so successful—and to find out if the next one is in the works.

 

ASAP Media: Expansion of the ASAP presence in Europe has been discussed for years. Why was it so important to have an event in Europe this year?  What does this mean for ASAP’s international footprint?

Mike Leonetti: We have to do things that prove our international commitment—and it’s been several years since the 2011 BioPharma Conference (held in the US and in Europe), which was our last major event in Europe. It’s ASAP’s strategy and desire to cultivate a strong European community of partnering and alliance management executives—and to develop Europe as part of our global vision. Simply put, I’m focused on making ASAP a true global player. We recognize the importance of doing much more outside of North America, to support our burgeoning international membership and chapters. Europe was perfect place to start.

 

To develop the international community, you need to bring partnering executives together as we do so successfully each year with the ASAP Global Alliance Summit. That’s a US-centric event—and now we have a repeatable event in Europe. I’m far from satisfied with our European presence. But I’m very pleased that we’re making significant progress and working with chapters and members in Europe to build on this foundation.

 

It certainly seems appropriate for an alliance management association to partner—but why did ASAP choose to partner for this event? How did this approach pay off?

We partnered with Thought Leader Global to demonstrate that a partnership capability can allow you to enter a market much more quickly and efficiently. When we made the commitment to do a European event, I only had eight months to plan and execute it—so this partnership was needed. I also think it was important for ASAP to take a bit of our own medicine. We faced the classic buy-build-ally choice and it made sense to ally. Thought Leader Global was an excellent partner—they provided excellent feet on the ground in Europe. It was a great opportunity for Thought Leader Global to connect with our community, and vice versa, and together we drew about 60 people there. So partnering gave us access to resources we don’t have, helped us build a new market faster—and there’s value inherent in the partnership.

 

The event featured two days of great small group discussion and main stage presentations from  notable ASAP members such as Alistair Pim of Schneider Electric, Nick Dunscomb from AstraZeneca, and Michael Andersen of Grundfos, to name a few.  In addition, new companies not from AstraZeneca currently ASAP members were attracted to and attended this event including Hitachi Data Systems and GE Oil and Gas, and others.

 

How would you characterize the event—and what were the hot topics for discussion?

Because the room was relatively small, typically not more than 35-40 people, it gave participants the ability to ask a lot of questions and was very interactive in most cases. Topics were interesting and diverse, encompassing all levels of strategic partnerships, including alliances, joint ventures, and post-merger integration.

 

Is there a renewed emphasis within ASAP on joint ventures and integration of mergers and acquisitions?

ASAP has de-focused on JVs and some have said that they really are not strategic partnerships. In fact, JVs are as strategic as you can get, but governed legally as well as with partnership governance structures and processes. For me, it was refreshing to look at those as very, very sophisticated partnerships.

 

And there’s no group more qualified than the alliance group in post-merger integration. I think some smart companies like Lilly and AstraZeneca are realizing they should use the experts who are good at bringing people together. Why wouldn’t we use what we’ve learned in the alliance world in post-merger integration? There’s been an explosion in M&As—but the M&A is the easy part. Post-integration failure rates are high because it really requires a lot of expertise to integrate operations and cultures. You need a sound integration strategy—or otherwise you have one side decimating the other side, getting rid of everyone. For me, it wasn’t ‘same-old, same-old’ –it was refreshing to have a post-merger integration topic, and we’ve asked Nick [Dunscombe] to do a session on it again at the 2015 ASAP Global Alliance Summit [March 2-5 in Orlando USA].

 

What’s the future hold—how will ASAP build on this success?

ASAP and Thought Leader Global have agreed in principle to partner to deliver the ASAP European Summit again in 2015, likely in October, so a bit earlier next year. The agreement hasn’t been signed—but that’s our plan.  ASAP will continue to focus on European development as we revitalize our existing European chapters in BeNeLux, France, and the UK, and as we work with Michael Andersen to explore new chapters in the Nordic region. And of course, we expect that our partnership with Thought Leader Global once again will accelerate our development of new, compelling programming for our 2015 European Summit.

Q&A: Senior Partner Execs to Share Experiences and Lessons Learned at ASAP European Alliance Summit

ASAP and Thought Leader Global are partnering to deliver the 2014 ASAP European Alliance Summit. The event, to be held in Geneva Nov. 13 and 14, 2014 at the Hotel President Wilson, will bring together executives to share alliance and joint venture case studies. This week, ASAP Media caught up with Scott Rogers, project manager at Thought Leader Global, to get a sneak preview of the event he and his colleagues are in the midst of preparing. 

 

ASAP Media: What are your goals for the ASAP European Alliance Summit? What type of event are you pulling together, and what kind of value and experience will participants receive?

 

Scott Rogers: The goal for the ASAP European Summit is to bring together mostly in-house corporate heads of alliances, JVs, and other strategic roles to share their experiences with each other in an open and informal environment. The speakers are real-life, “down-to-earth” corporate practitioners, sharing recent experiences, hopefully some good stories with practical examples and lessons learned.  No single person is expected to have all the answers, especially when it comes to alliances and JVs, but between all speakers, the peer-to-peer discussions and moderation, the entire event will cover a significant amount of solutions.

 

ASAP Media: Can you give us a flavor of the session topics and presenters?

 

Rogers: Topics for this meeting include presentations on “Setting up a Combined Alliance and Integration Department In-House,” “The Use of Alliances to Expand Product Offerings,” and “Developing an Onboarding Process for Alliances and Partnerships.” Additionally, there will be several presentations on open innovation as well as presentations on “Managing Governance and Performance in JVs,” “Using JVs and Alliances to Grow in New Markets,” “JVs and Alliances in Russia & Turkey,” among others.

 

Attending the forum's speaker panel are strategic alliance directors from Philips, Schneider-Electric, GE Oil & Gas, Grundfos, AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline and Hitachi Data Systems. Additionally, partnership and business development directors from PGT Healthcare, Maersk Oil, Amadeus IT Group, International Paper, LORD Corporation and Konica Minolta will be presenting.

 

ASAP Media: We noted that you’re bringing a cross-section of presenters, both those who are alliance executives as well as other types of senior execs, and from multiple industries. Can you describe the value this approach will bring to the discussion?

 

Rogers:  Many of our presenters are alliance executives and several are involved in other strategic roles. Plus, we are bringing together multiple industries—pharma, IT, oil/gas, technology, etc.  The main benefit of this is to benchmark across different functions from different kinds of organizations. Particularly outside the pharmaceutical industry, strategic alliances are managed in several different ways, so it will be interesting to compare and contrast.
