Overview

Contracts require it. The smallest of companies build it into their roadmaps. It is no longer a question as to if a biopharmaceutical company–or related service companies–develop an alliance management capability. It is table stakes–a must have, not a nice to have. What alliance management looks like and what it is responsible for is as varied as the companies that make up the sector.

Over the past few months, The Rhythm of Business has engaged in a research project to bring to the ASAP community a current understanding of how the practice of alliance management in life sciences is evolving and adapting to account for:

  • How alliance portfolios are being reshaped through acquisitions, divestitures, clinical collaborations, strategic sourcing, and increased traditional licensing transactions
  • The rise of the partner everywhere world that has pushed alliance management to the edges of the –decentralizing responsibility and accountability
  • The increasing legal and technical complexity of agreements, requiring a significant level of specialized knowledge–and what that means for recruiting and training the next generation of alliance managers

This research is ongoing. Join us in this can't-miss webinar as Jan Twombly and Jeff Shuman unveil their initial findings and engage the audience in a real-time collection and reporting of data. Participants will receive a summary of the data collected during the webinar, as well as an annotated version of the webinar presentation.

Twombly serves on the Executive and Management Committee of the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals (ASAP). She is editorial advisor and frequent contributor to ASAP Media, publisher of Strategic Alliance Magazine, and together with Jeff Shuman, contributed to the ASAP Handbook of Alliance Management: A Practitioner's Guide. Her volunteer responsibilities previously included the program content of ASAP conferences. Shuman was part of the team that created the CA-AM and CSAP certifications.

Shuman is also a tenured professor of management at Bentley University where two of his courses, Managing Strategic Alliances and Entrepreneurial Thinking, are part of the MBA curriculum. Both he and his students appreciate the many contributions of ASAP members to the next generation through their classroom presentations and student interviews!

Believing that one can't teach without experience, Shuman has founded or been part of the founding team of five companies across multiple industries–including a computer company that was the first to build an alliance with Microsoft to distribute Windows 3.0 through an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) environment. All of his companies have had partnering as a core strategy and organizing principle of the business.

Together they have a rich history of developing, publishing, and presenting strategic and practical thinking that advances the art and science of partnering and alliance management.
