Participants in this session will be introduced to an award-winning alliance between three government organizations that really had to change their classical management approach and behavior to make this Dutch alliance a success. It has been a long journey from a mainly vertical and hierarchical management approach by the individual alliance partners, to a more balanced approach between vertical and horizontal (collaborative) powers. In this session the story is told about the initial problems, the challenges, the philosophy, and the management approach in relation to this important alliance that collects 60% of the Dutch national tax income.

Participants will gain insights in a four-fold model for analyzing and managing an alliance: 1) content, 2) structure, 3) relation, and 4) culture. In particular the importance of the last two will be emphasized. Another subject is the use of the classical four cardinal virtues for good government (Plato) as the cultural basis for each governance model and consultation structure.

Further, participants will learn:

  • Use of ecosystem-thinking in an alliance
  • Will be introduced to the eight pillars for managing an alliance
  • Get acquainted with some interventions (building blocks)
  • Hear lessons learned how changes can be implemented with success
