Association Background:

Founded in 1998, the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals (ASAP) is a professional association dedicated to elevating and promoting the profession and discipline of alliance management.

ASAP is the only organization dedicated to providing knowledge and resources, education and professional development, a certification program in alliance management and a community for networking to alliance professionals at every stage of business collaboration—from partnership formation to alliance management after a deal is signed all the way through to the dissolution of a relationship.

ASAP has a global presence with approximately 2400 members, more than 80 corporate members and about 400 individual members.

ASAP is a not-for-profit corporation, organized under the laws of Massachusetts, and exempt from taxes under Sec. 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Currently ASAP operates with a staff of 7.5 FTEs including the President and Chief Executive Officer at its headquarters in MA near Boston, with a total annual budget of ~$1.4M. Revenues are derived from memberships and various programs including three annual conferences. Additional information can be found at www.strategic-alliances.org.

Job Summary:

The President and Chief Executive Officer provides leadership for all aspects of the organization’s operations with an emphasis on the long-term goals of the organization and the profession, positive financial health, growth and re-investment--consistent with management of a 501(c)(6) organization.  Serves as an advocate for the profession of alliance management.  


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the association’s representative to the board of directors, employees, members, sponsors, outside partners and ASAP event participants.
  • Uses a modern growth mindset to oversee the organization’s financial structure, ensuring adequate and sound funding for the mission and goals of the company, consistent with management of a non-profit; Focus on membership growth and retention.
  • P&L Management; Reviews the financial results of all operations, comparing them with the association’s objectives and taking appropriate measures to correct unsatisfactory performance and results.
  • Manages business development, marketing and PR efforts to raise the profile of ASAP and alliance management in corporate, non-profit and government sectors, worldwide.
  • Works with the board of directors and team members to establish short-term objectives and long-range goals, and related plans and policies.
  • Prospectively determines ASAP’s own partnering strategy, to support the organization’s growth.
  • Presents regular reports on ASAP’s operations to the board of directors and to organization staff.
  • Ensures the organization’s compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, and standards, consistent with that of a 501(c)(6) organization.
  • Represents ASAP at conferences as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties to benefit the mission of the organization.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the ongoing operations of all aspects of the organization.
  • Manages and directs ASAP toward its primary goals and objectives.
  • Leads a team to consider major decisions including the organization’s own partnering and growth plans.
  • Promotes communication and cooperation among the team to create a spirit of unity in the organization.
  • Mentors team members in their professional development.
  • Manage the hybrid working environment; provide flexibility while bringing team together every 2-3 months.
  • Makes employment decisions.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proven passion for ASAP’s mission.
  • Understanding of how to drive growth of a membership organization.
  • Knowledge of ASAP’s key sectors--biopharma and tech—and the practice of alliance management in these industries.
  • High-level strategic thinking.
  • Excellent managerial and financial skills and the ability to take leadership over any business operations (finance, communications / marketing, membership, etc.) area; P&L management.
  • Superlative communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate as a leader.
  • Leadership in a hybrid working model (virtual and in person) requiring periodic physical presence with the ASAP team and residence or relocation within the continental US.
  • Global team work experience preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of management and financial practices in all areas and phases of business operations.
  • Willingness to travel as needed. 


Education and Experience:

  • Extensive professional experience in leadership roles.
  • Experience working with Boards and volunteers.
  • ASAP CA-AM or CSAP certification preferred, though not required.
  • Education may vary; an advanced degree in business administration is preferred, but not required.


Physical Requirements:

  • May require prolonged periods sitting and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to navigate the organization’s physical premises.
