Alliance managers overseeing fast-growing alliance portfolios and working in long-standing alliance practices alike struggle to balance the need to set the vision and strategy for their collaborations and develop the processes, systems, and tools necessary for achieving them. So partnering-minded companies across multiple industries are increasingly establishing operations manager positions to set up systems and handle a variety of duties, thereby freeing alliance managers to concentrate on accomplishing higher-level objectives. Alliance operations managers are spearheading PRM software platform implementations, ensuring contract compliance, procuring and delivering appropriate training and supplemental skill-development resources, and ensuring consistency in the use of alliance management tools and practices across the entire alliance management team, among other highly strategic responsibilities. They’re making sure that routine but very necessary tasks are carried out and that coherent processes are consistently followed—but their job is never boring and far from routine.
