Internal cohesion is where alliance success starts

Posted By: Kimberly Miller Program Executive Summary, Online Program,

ASAP’s member-only online program on internal cohesion made one thing clear: the strongest alliance work begins inside the organization. Before teams can build trust with a partner, they need the discipline to align internally, communicate clearly, and make decisions together.

  1. Speak with one voice. Healthy internal debate has a place, but partners need clarity. Conflicting messages create confusion, slow decisions, and weaken trust.
  2. Know which stakeholders matter. Strong alignment starts with mapping the people who shape decisions, understanding what they need, and engaging them before the room gets crowded.
  3. Do the pre-work. Strong decisions rarely begin in the formal meeting. Alliance teams move faster when stakeholders are engaged early, concerns are surfaced before decisions are made, and people understand what is being asked of them before they enter the room.
  4. Make alliance work part of the job. If alliance responsibilities sit outside goals, measures, and rewards, teams end up swimming against the current. Alliance work belongs in the core business rhythm.
  5. Translate across functions, cultures, and expectations. Alliance professionals bridge different vocabularies, risk tolerances, time zones, and operating norms. Shared language and one source of truth keep the work honest and connected.

Internal cohesion is not soft work. It is the operating system that allows partnerships to move. ASAP members can watch the full recording in ASAP Connect, and anyone interested in future member programs can explore the upcoming ASAP events calendar.
